On 25 April 2024, at an event held in CIVA, Brussels, Mr.Georg Häusler, director for Culture, Creativity and Sport of the European Commission, together with Mr. Fréderic Druot, president of the 2024 jury, announced the Winners of the 2024 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture / Mies van der Rohe Awards:

_ EUmiesaward 2024: Study Pavilion on the Campus of the Technical University of Braunschweig (Lower Saxony, DE), architects Gustav Düsing, Max Hacke (Berlin, DE)

_ EUmies Emerging architecture 2024: Gabriel García Márquez Library in Barcelona(Catalonia, ES), architects SUMA arquitectura (Madrid, ES)

Fundació Mies van der Rohe

The 5 Architecture finalist works are the Plato Contemporary Art Gallery in Ostrava (Moravia-Silesia, CZ) by KWK Promes (Katowice, PL); the Study Pavilion on the Campus of the Technical University of Braunschweig (Lower Saxony, DE) by Gustav Düsing & Max Hacke (Berlin, DE); the Reggio School in Madrid, (Community of Madrid, ES) by ANDRES JAQUE / OFFICE FOR POLITICAL INNOVATION (Madrid, ES); the Rebirth of the Convent Saint-François in Sainte-Lucie-de-Tallano / Santa Lucia de Tallà (Corsica, FR) by Amelia Tavella Architectes (Aix en Provence, FR); and the Häge in Lund (Scania County, SE) by Brendeland & Kristoffersen architects (Oslo, NO).

The 2 Emerging finalist works are the Gabriel García Márquez Library in Barcelona (Catalonia, ES) by SUMA arquitectura (Madrid, ES) and the Square and Tourist Office in Piódão (Central Portugal, PT) by Branco del Rio (Coimbra, PT).

 

In March, the jury will visit the five architecture finalist works and will decide on the Prize Winners. The announcement of both the Architecture Winner and the Emerging Winner will take palce on 25 April in CIVA, Brussels.

 

The Awards Ceremony will take place on 14 May 2024 at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona. Save the date for the lectures, debates, exhibition opening and celebration with the jury members, winners, finalists, clients and other guests and representatives.

 

The Architecture and Emerging Winners will be announced on 25 April 2024 during an event at CIVA (Centre for Information, Documentation and Exhibitions on the city, architecture, landscape and urban planning in Brussels), with a conversation including a representative of the European Commission, the president of the international jury of the EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture, Frédéric Druot, the director of the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, Anna Ramos, and the director of CIVA, Nikolaus Hirsch.

 

17. 1. 2024: 40 shortlisted works

Fundació Mies van der Rohe announced the list of works shortlisted for the EU mies 2024 awards on January 17, 2024 at 8 p.m.

The jury formed by Frédéric Druot (chairman), Martin Braathen, Pippo Ciorra, Tinatin Gurgenidze, Adriana Krnáčová, Sala Makumbundu, and Hrvoje Njiric have chosen the 40 shortlisted works of the EUmies Awards 2024.

Among them are also two projects of Slovenian bureaus:

_Covering the Remains of the Church of St. John the Baptist in Žiče Charterhouse with the temporary lapidary, Kartuzija Žiče, Slovenia, 2022, architects: Rok Žnidaršič, Jerneja Fischer Knap, Samo Mlakar, Katja Ivić, Dino Mujić, Medprostor, which won the international 2022 Piranesi Award in November 2022.

_ Kindergarten Bohinj, Bohinj, Slovenia, 2023, architects: Arrea arhitektura (Ana Jerman, Janja Šušnjar), KAL A (Sofía Romeo Gurrea-Nozaleda, Miguel Sotos Fernández-Zúñiga), landscape architects: AKKA (Luka Javornik, Lara Gligić), who received the international 2023 Piranesi 2023  Honorary Mention in November 2023.

All the projects are part of the most inclusive trans-European public archive of contemporary architecture comprising 4512 works from 1988 until today.

The EUmies Awards Day that comprises the Awards Ceremony, will take place on 13/14 May 2024 at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona, in a day-long-event that will include lectures by the authors of the winning and finalist works, discussions with the architects, clients, policymakers and jury members; the exhibition with the 362 works participating in the EU Mies Award 2024; and the events of the Barcelona Architecture Weeks.
