Piranesi Award
PDA conference is traditionally accompanied by several architectural
exhibitions. The most important is the international architectural
exhibition Piranesi of recent works by Central European architects which
compete for distinguished international Piranesi Award. Projects,
created during last two years, are selected by national selectors. Each
country (Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Italy,
Slovakia and Slovenia) presents five projects. Part of the exhibition is
the international student's Piranesi exhibition, presenting selected
projects from eight different Faculties of Architecture (Ljubljana,
Maribor, Graz, Vienna, Trst, Pescara, Zagreb, Split). The exhibition is
presented at the gallery Mestna galerija Piran. The international jury
is composed of participating speakers of the conference. Piranesi Award
is named after the 18th century Italian artist and architect Giovanni
Battista Piranesi (1720–1778), who’s family comes from Piran. Reflections 2009
Lecturers and audience as well as architects and students involved in
the Piranesi awards really made the best of the informal opportunities
to exchange ideas and experiences.
Milton Braga, MMBB, architect, São Paulo
My participation in Piran was a re-charge for me, and the rich exchange
of ideas there has allowed me to bring back more concrete concepts for
the pursuit of meaningful architecture in the midst of this neon-capitalist
city.
Aaron Tan, RAD, architect, Hong Kong
I found this year’s Piran Days conference to be an exceptionally
constructive meeting of minds from a wide variety of international
cultures, including the discovery of many shared values and intentions
regarding the future of architecture among speakers and participants,
the whole organized flawlessly and elegantly, and all taking place in
the most beautiful setting.
Robert McCarter, Ruth and Norman Moore Professor of Architecture,
Washington University, St. Louis
Piranski dnevi arhitekture so bili zanimivi, saj so predavatelji s
celega sveta s predstavitvijo svojih del uspeli pokazati, da obstoja
občutljiva arhitektura povsod, ne glede na različne prostorske, časovne
in razvojne kontekste. Njena izhodisča so povsod enaka – posluh za
tradicijo, kontekst, prostor, svetlobo, konstrukcijo, materiale in
ljudi, ki jo naseljujejo ... Številčna udeležba in izjemno vzdušje
arhitektov iz širse okolice dokazujeta, da so dnevi in nagrada Piranesi
lahko priložnost za boljše povezave dežel nekoč enotnega kulturnega
prostora severnega Mediterana.
Maruša Zorec, architect, Ljubljana
We were reminded that although many of the major issues that we
currently face as practicing architects are universal, our approach to
practice and processes of engagement are shaped by our regional
circumstances. PDA is a conference defined very much by the city that
hosts it and its own traditions that both curate regional culture and
enquire into the circumstances of the world beyond.
